Why are quartz plates more expensive than ordinary glass plates?

Glass plates are ubiquitous in daily life and are available in a wide variety of types, which allows them to meet the needs of a variety of occasions. It is acknowledged that discrepancies in product characteristics may be attributable to divergent production processes. Quartz plates, also known as quartz glass plates, are composed of a mineral that is abundant across the earth surface. Given that they are both types of glass plates, why the price discrepancy between quartz and normal glass plates in the current market? It is imperative to ascertain which aspects are reflected by this considerable price discrepancy. The present article will provide a comprehensive overview of quartz glass plates.

1. Composition

The chemical composition of ordinary glass plates is dominated by sodium silicate, silicon dioxide and calcium silicate. Quartz glass plate is a special type of glass manufactured from silicon dioxide. In comparison with ordinary glass plates, quartz glass plates exhibit superior hardness and transparency.

2. In terms of hardness and light transmittance

As previously stated, quartz glass plates are generally harder than ordinary glass plates. But to what degree? Quartz glass plates are typically characterized by a Mohs hardness scale rating of 7, in contrast to the 5.5 to 6 range typically exhibited by ordinary glass plates. In terms of light transmittance, quartz glass plates are capable of effectively allowing infrared and ultraviolet light to pass through, which is a property that is difficult for ordinary glass plate.

3. In terms of color and heat resistance

In comparison, quartz glass plates are colorless. However, ordinary glass plates can exhibit a range of different colors. In terms of heat resistance, quartz glass plates are capable of withstanding high temperatures without cracking, even when subjected to extreme heat and then immersed in water. However, ordinary glass plates are more susceptible to cracking when exposed to high temperatures.

As demonstrated above, the price difference between quartz and ordinary glass plates is generally reflected in the above aspects. What is the most effective method of distinguishing quartz glass from ordinary glass? The distinction between the two can be determined by a single, straightforward method, that is the heat resistance, the most notable difference between quartz and ordinary glass plates. Quartz glass is able to withstand very high temperatures, but ordinary glass is prone to cracking at high temperatures. In addition, the high price of quartz glass relative to ordinary glass can be attributed to its superior physical properties and the high cost associated with its manufacturing process. Consequently, quartz glass is primarily used in settings with specific requirements, making it a rarity in everyday life.

To summarize, there are several key differences between quartz and  ordinary glass plates. These differences are evident in various aspects, including composition, hardness, light transmittance, heat resistance, and production cost, especially the application values and scopes, which all directly impacts quartz plate pricing.
