The performance of sapphire high-strength glass in harsh chemical environments

As an engineering material, sapphire high-strength glass demonstrates high performance in terms of chemical stability and can effectively resist corrosion from various acids, alkalis and solvents. Consequently, it is widely used in many demanding industrial sectors. Its unique crystal structure and chemical composition give it excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for use in harsh chemical environments.

The main component of sapphire is aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), and its crystal structure is α-aluminium oxide, a highly stable compound. This structure means that it hardly reacts with common acids, bases or organic solvents at room temperature. For example, laboratory tests showed that sapphire is highly stable in 98% sulfuric acid, 37% hydrochloric acid, and 65% nitric acid. Even when exposed to high temperatures, its rate of corrosion was significantly lower than that of standard glass or other engineering materials. In addition, it has excellent resistance to strong alkalis, such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. This is particularly important for use in chemical equipment and high-precision instruments.

The chemical stability of high-strength sapphire glass is reflected not only in its resistance to individual reagents, but also in its ability to withstand complex chemical environments. In many industrial scenarios, sapphire glass must be able to withstand the erosion of multiple chemical substances simultaneously. For instance, in the semiconductor manufacturing process, it must withstand the alternating effects of etching gases, strong acids and strong alkalis. Due to its high purity and dense crystal structure, it can maintain stable performance under such harsh conditions and avoid performance degradation or failure caused by corrosion.

In addition to being resistant to acids and alkalis, sapphire also stands out for its resistance to corrosion from organic solvents. Common organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol and xylene have almost no effect on it. This property makes high-strength sapphire glass a popular choice for use in the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in laboratory equipment. In the context of oil extraction, for instance, it can be used to manufacture corrosion-resistant observation windows and sensor components. This ensures that equipment operates reliably and stably in an environment rich in hydrogen sulfide and other organic solvents.

The chemical stability of sapphire high-strength glass is closely linked to its surface characteristics. Compared with other materials, sapphire possesses a smooth and non-reactive surface that resists contamination, thereby minimizing the likelihood of chemical substances adhering to or penetrating it. Additionally, its exceptional hardness and wear resistance contribute to its long-term durability in demanding environments. For example, in optical applications, it is widely used in the production of high-precision lenses and windows. Even after prolonged exposure to corrosive conditions, its optical properties remain unaffected by surface degradation.
