How to avoid surface scratches during the processing of quartz tubes?

How to avoid surface scratches during the processing of quartz tubes?

Quartz tubes are utilized extensively in a variety of disciplines, including optics, semiconductors and photovoltaics, due to their high purity and transparency. Quartz tubes are susceptible to scratching during the manufacturing process due to their high hardness and smooth surface. This can result in a reduction in both their optical performance and aesthetic appeal. Consequently, in the processing of quartz tubes, it is imperative to take measures to prevent surface scratches. The subsequent discourse will address the subject of preventing superficial scratches on quartz tubes from multiple perspectives.

1. Select the appropriate processing tools

Quartz tubes have a relatively high hardness (with a Mohs hardness of 7), so tools with higher hardness or matching hardness need to be used during the processing. Common processing tools include diamond tools and silicon carbide grinding wheels.

2. Optimize the processing technology

The choice of processing technology has a direct impact on the surface quality of quartz tubes. Here are some suggestions for optimizing the process.

(1) Cutting technology

When cutting quartz tubes, it is recommended to adopt a low-speed and high-precision cutting method to avoid surface damage caused by heat and vibration generated by high-speed cutting. Meanwhile, the use of coolant during the cutting process is recommended in order to reduce friction and heat accumulation.

(2) Grinding technology

When grinding quartz tubes, it is recommended that a grinding wheel or sandpaper with an appropriate grit size is selected, and that a progressive grinding method is adopted, that is, gradually transitioning from coarse sand to fine sand. Following each grinding process, it is essential to meticulously clean the surface to eliminate any residual abrasive particles that could potentially lead to secondary scratches.

(3) Polishing technology

Polishing is a key step to improve the surface smoothness of quartz tubes. Polishing powders such as cerium oxide and aluminum oxide can be used in combination with soft polishing cloths for polishing. During the polishing process, uniform pressure and speed should be maintained to avoid local overheating or over-polishing.

3. Improve the craftsmanship of operators

The operational skills and standards of the operators are directly linked to the processing quality of quartz tubes. Please find below some suggested operations.

(1) Vocational training

Operators are required to receive comprehensive training to ensure proficiency in handling and processing quartz tubes. Experienced operators are able to control processing parameters more effectively and reduce the occurrence of scratches.

(2) Operational norms

Operators are required to strictly adhere to the stipulated process specifications during processing to prevent surface scratches caused by improper handling. For instance, when handling and installing quartz tubes, it is recommended that clean gloves be worn to avoid direct contact with the surface by hand.

4. Quality inspection and feedback

Following the completion of processing, the surface quality of the quartz tube should be inspected in order to swiftly identify and address any scratch issues. Please find below some suggestions for testing.

(1) Visual check

In a well-lit environment, observe the surface of the quartz tube with the naked eye to check for any obvious scratches or defects.

(2) Optical detection

In order to ensure that the surface finish of the quartz tube meets the required specifications, it is necessary to conduct a more detailed inspection using a microscope or optical inspection equipment.

5. Storage and Transportation

Quartz tubes are also prone to scratches during storage and transportation. Here are some storage and transportation suggestions:

(1) Storage environment

Quartz tubes should be stored in a dry and clean environment and avoid contact with hard objects. Special brackets or trays can be used to ensure that there is sufficient space between the quartz tubes.

(2) Packing material

During transportation, shockproof and scratch-resistant packaging materials such as foam and bubble wrap should be used to prevent surface scratches caused by vibration or collision.

In order to prevent superficial damage to quartz tubes, it is necessary to take into consideration a number of factors. These include the selection of the tool, the optimization of processing technology, operation norms, quality inspection, storage and transportation. Scientific processing methods and rigorous quality control measures have been demonstrated to minimize surface scratches on quartz tubes to a considerable extent. Consequently, this has resulted in enhanced optical performance and an improvement in appearance quality, thereby ensuring compliance with the stringent requirements demanded by high-end application fields.
