The diverse properties of sapphire glass and its potential in industrial applications

The evolution of materials used in mobile phone has been a focal point for both manufacturers and consumers. From the past plastics and metals to aviation alloys and leather, the introduction of each new material has been met with a positive market response and wide user acceptance. Sapphire glass, a new screen material, is becoming increasingly popular in the mobile phone industry. So, what exactly makes this new type of material unique? Let us delve into the intricacies of sapphire technology and its remarkable performance.

Sapphire, with its hardness second only to diamond, has found new applications in the field of science and technology. After elemental purification, it is ingeniously integrated into the manufacturing of transparent glass panels, thereby endowing these products with hardness that surpasses that of traditional chemically reinforced glass. Sapphire glass demonstrates a hardness of 9, whereas the hardness of standard glass is only 5. Furthermore, the fracture toughness value of sapphire reaches 2.3MPa m, which is almost three to four times that of standard glass.

Sapphire glass is renowned for its outstanding hardness and impressive electrical and dielectric properties, along with multiple advantageous characteristics. These properties have established sapphire glass as a leading solution in the industrial sector. In addition, it is widely utilized in the manufacturing of optical components, infrared-transmitting optical windows and more, serving as a substitute for other optical materials.

Furthermore, sapphire glass is a highly effective material for use in infrared and far-infrared military equipment. This includes night vision infrared and far-infrared sights, night vision cameras and other instruments, as well as satellite and space technology instruments and meters. At the same time, it is also used as a window for high-power lasers, optical prisms, optical windows, UV and IR windows, and lenses. In addition, it plays an important role in high-precision instruments and meters in fields such as navigation and aerospace.

However, the application of sapphire glass also faces a series of challenges. The manufacturing process is complex, which results in a production time four thousand times longer than that of ordinary glass, and extremely high production temperature requirements. Due to its high hardness, any error in the production process may lead to a significant increase in the later cutting cost. All these factors have restricted the large-scale application of sapphire glass. However, it is anticipated that the continuous advancement of technology will result in the emergence of more innovative technologies that will break through these limitations in the future, thus allowing sapphire glass to become more widely utilized.

To sum up, although sapphire glass has been widely recognized in the industrial and military fields, its application in the consumer field still faces many challenges. Problems such as immature technology, low yield rate and inability to produce on a large scale have all become stumbling blocks to the popularization of sapphire glass. However, with the continuous development of technology, there is every reason to believe that, once these technical issues are overcome, sapphire glass will trigger a revolutionary change in the mobile phone industry and even the entire consumer market.
