Technical Analysis of Key Points in Large-Diameter Quartz Tube Production

Generally speaking, large-diameter quartz tubes refer to transparent quartz glass tubes with an outer diameter of over 100mm. Their manufacturing difficulty is much higher than that of ordinary specifications. Quartz glass is characterized by its high melting point and high viscosity. Conventional tube drawing does not permit the formation of large-diameter tubes in a single step. In most cases, secondary forming and tube expansion are necessary. The process commences with the heating of the smaller-diameter tube blank to its softening temperature. This is followed by the expansion of the diameter through the application of air pressure or mechanical means, resulting in the formation of the required large-diameter size. The process has stringent requirements for parameters such as temperature uniformity, feeding speed, and pipe expansion rate. Any fluctuation in the link may result in uneven wall thickness or surface defects.

There are several methods by which the technical capacity to produce large-diameter quartz tubes can be ascertained. One of the key elements to consider is the control of raw material purity. The presence of metal impurities in high-purity quartz sand can directly impact the temperature resistance and light transmission performance of quartz tubes. Another key consideration is the precision of the forming equipment. For instance, the number and degree of automation of the secondary forming and expanding tube production determine the upper limit of production capacity and product consistency. Furthermore, post-processing capabilities such as cutting, grinding and polishing, cold working, etc., will also affect the final delivery form.

The application fields of large-diameter quartz tubes are very extensive, which in turn has also driven manufacturers to constantly improve their processes. In the semiconductor industry, large-diameter quartz tubes are frequently utilized as diffusion and oxidation furnace tubes. These tubes must be capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of a thousand degrees Celsius while maintaining chemical inertness. In the field of photovoltaics, quartz tubes are utilized in equipment such as polysilicon reduction furnaces, where stringent standards are applied regarding purity and thermal shock resistance.

In the optical industry, particular attention is paid to the transmittance and optical uniformity of quartz tubes. Quartz glass is a brittle material. During the manufacturing and processing of large-diameter tubes, micro-cracks, bubbles or crystallization are potential issues. Mature production systems generally involve the implementation of comprehensive quality control frameworks, encompassing systematic testing methodologies at each stage of the production process, from raw material inspection to finished product delivery. For instance, the uniformity of the tube wall can be inspected by an optical projector, or the material performance can be evaluated using a light transmittance instrument.

Furthermore, the manufacturing of large-diameter quartz tubes necessitates the utilization of specialized equipment such as hot working lathes and cold working centers. Hot working is used for initial shaping, including cutting, sealing and bending tubes, while cold working achieves enhanced dimensional accuracy and surface quality through grinding and polishing. The ability to perform high-precision cold working operations is a critical factor in ensuring the delivery of quartz tubes that meet the stringent requirements for end face parallelism and outer diameter tolerance.

From a technological development perspective, the production of large-diameter quartz tubes is moving towards higher purity, larger sizes and more complex shapes. This necessitates that manufacturers make continuous investments in research and development, with a view to improving molding processes and processing equipment. For users, a grasp of these technical backgrounds facilitates more informed selection of suitable suppliers based on criteria such as scientific aptitude, rather than merely on considerations like price and delivery time.
