Selection of Appropriate Heat Treatment Process for Quartz Plate Processing

Quartz plates are a high-performance inorganic non-metallic material that is used in a variety of fields due to its excellent high-temperature resistance, chemical stability, electrical insulation and optical properties. These properties make it a popular choice in the semiconductor, optical fibre communication, solar energy, chemical and other industries. In the processing of quartz plates, the heat treatment process is a crucial step. It directly affects their physical properties, chemical stability and service life. Therefore, in order to select the most appropriate heat treatment process, it is essential to consider the material properties, processing requirements and application scenarios of the quartz plate.

1. The purpose of heat treatment processes

(1) Relieve internal stress

Internal stress may occur during the forming process of quartz plates. Heat treatment can relieve the stress and enhance the mechanical strength of the material.

(2) Improve microstructure

Heat treatment can optimize the crystalline state of quartz plates, enhancing their thermal stability and chemical stability.

(3) Enhance surface quality

Heat treatment can remove surface defects and improve the optical performance and corrosion resistance of quartz plates.

(4) Adjust physical properties

By controlling the heat treatment parameters, the hardness, density and coefficient of thermal expansion of the quartz plate can be adjusted.

2. Selection of heat treatment processes

(1) Annealing process

Annealing is the most widely used heat treatment process in quartz plate processing. It is used to eliminate internal stress and improve the uniformity of the material.

Temperature choice: The quartz annealing temperature is typically between 1000 and 1200 degrees Celsius. The concrete temperature is contingent on the dimensions of the quartz plate and the initial stress state.

Holding time: The insulation time is usually 1 to 4 hours to ensure that the internal stress is fully released.

Cooling rate: The cooling rate should be slow, usually controlled to within 5℃ per minute, to prevent the generation of new internal stress.

(2) Quenching process

The quenching process alters the microstructure of quartz plates through rapid cooling and is typically used to enhance the hardness and strength of the material.

Temperature selection: The quenching temperature is usually between 1200℃ and 1400℃, close to the softening point of quartz plates.

Cooling medium: The cooling medium is typically water, oil or air, depending on the size and performance requirements of the quartz plate.

Cooling rate: The cooling rate is generally faster, typically above 100 ℃/min.

The quenching process is an effective method for enhancing the strength and wear resistance of quartz plates. However, it should be noted that this process can introduce internal stress, which often requires subsequent annealing to address.

3. Optimization of heat treatment processes

(1) Temperature control

It is imperative to precisely control the heat treatment temperature to avoid it from being excessively high or low, as this can potentially compromise the material's performance.

(2) Time management

The holding time must be adjusted according to the size and stress state of the quartz plate in order to ensure adequate treatment.

(3) Cooling rate

It is essential that the cooling rate is selected based on the performance requirements of the material to avoid defects caused by excessive or insufficient cooling.

The process of heat treating quartz plates is essential for ensuring their performance and reliability in application. By implementing a systematic approach involving processes such as annealing, quenching, tempering and surface treatment, the elimination of internal stress can be achieved, leading to enhanced microstructure, improved surface quality and optimized physical properties. In terms of processing, it is essential to optimize the heat treatment parameters according to the specific application and performance requirements of the quartz plate. This ensures the stability and consistency of the process.
